Summer Fun for Kids with Skin Conditions
(March 2005) Living with a serious skin condition, like hyperhidrosis, can be especially difficult for children and teens. Being in a supportive, understanding environment and having the chance to forget about their skin for a little while can, however, make a big difference. This summer, you can help kids with skin conditions enjoy a week in just such an environment -- at a very special camp designed just for kids with conditions like psoriasis and hyperhidrosis.

Every year, the American Academy of Dermatology sponsors Camp Discovery -- a week of fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, arts and crafts, and other activities for children and teens with skin disorders. Dermatologists who are members of the Academy can nominate campers to attend.

Under the expert care of dermatologists and nurses, Camp Discovery gives children the opportunity to spend time with other young people who have similar skin conditions. Many of the counselors have serious skin conditions as well and can provide support and advice to campers.

Fun, friendship, and independence are on the top of the agenda. And, everyone shares in the discovery of what it's like to be included. After spending a week at the camp during a recent summer, one camper said, "I like Camp [Discovery] because you can be yourself and you don't have to think about your skin condition." Another said, "I like hanging out with people who really know how you feel."

There is no fee for the camp. Full scholarships, including transportation, are provided by the American Academy of Dermatology through the generous donations of their members and other organizations. Children must be nominated by an American Academy of Dermatology member physician.

If you know a child who would be a good candidate for Camp Discovery, talk to your dermatologist about him or her. Most likely, your dermatologist is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and is therefore eligible to recommend children for Camp Discovery.
