(March/April 2006) The International Hyperhidrosis Society has launched a new section on its Web site, www.SweatHelp.org, and a free handbook for teenagers who suffer from excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis.
Called "Teen Sweat 101" these new educational and fun resources help teenagers understand sweating – what's normal and what's excessive – and to know that if they're concerned about sweating, they're not alone! Research shows that 48 percent of teens sometimes think that their sweating is a problem. And with the majority of hyperhidrosis cases starting during adolescence, it's no wonder that teens are sweatin' sweat.
We all remember how cruel kids can be and how awkward we sometimes felt during middle and high school. Add excessive sweating to the equation and adolescence can feel downright unbearable. Teens who sweat excessively say that they get teased, that they avoid contact with their teachers, and feel excluded from social activities. These youngsters need support and "Teen Sweat 101" can help them to find it. From facts about why we all sweat, to realistic treatment options, to tips about getting insurance coverage, "Teen Sweat 101" provides teens with encouragement and tools to take action.
Both the "Teen Sweat 101" section on www.SweatHelp.org and the free 50-page, full-color handbook provide useful information on how to tackle hyperhidrosis as well as thought-provoking, engaging exercises that can help teens gauge and discuss how excessive sweating impacts their lives. To order a free copy of the "Teen Sweat 101" handbook, just send your request via e-mail to Support@SweatHelp.org.
In addition, the online component of "Teen Sweat 101" hosts an "Ask Frances" column where teens can e-mail questions to Frances Rivers, a 16-year-old girl who suffered from underarm and hand sweating for years before finally getting treatment. Frances' story of overcoming excessive sweating is inspirational and she helps other kids struggling with sweating to know that there's hope and help.
The "Teen Sweat 101" campaign was made possible by generous educational grants from the Secret® antiperspirant brand and Allergan, Inc. and has received media coverage in the Detroit News, St. Paul Pioneer Press and on KidzWorld.com, just to name a few. Eleven parent magazines around the U.S. have indicated that they will run related articles and provide parents and their children with information about the new program. "Teen Sweat 101" was also highlighted at the recent American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, where Dr. Dee Anna Glaser (an International Hyperhidrosis Society board member) spoke to the press about the devastating effects excessive sweating can have on teens and the importance of helping these young patients find effective treatment. For more about this year's AAD Annual Meeting, read the related story in this issue of SweatSolutions.
