AAD Symposium Makes Important Statement About Sweating
(November/December 2005) In 2006, hundreds of dermatologists will attend a full-on hyperhidrosis educational event at the American Academy of Dermatology’s Annual Meeting. On March 4, 2006, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the Academy will host its first hyperhidrosis symposium. Symposiums at Academy meetings are three-hour events designed to educate as many dermatologists as possible. By holding a hyperhidrosis symposium the Academy is making an important public statement about the impact and prevalence of excessive sweating. Dermatologists experienced with treating hyperhidrosis as well as those completely new to the condition are expected to attend.

"The symposium will greatly increase awareness of the seriousness of hyperhidrosis among the physicians who are often the best suited to treat it," says International Hyperhidrosis Society Executive Director, Lisa Pieretti. "The outcome will most likely be immediate. We expect dermatologists, even those who have never treated excessive sweating before, to leave the symposium better prepared to make accurate diagnoses and good treatment choices for their patients."

The special three-hour hyperhidrosis symposium (directed by International Hyperhidrosis Society Board Member, Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, Vice Chairman Department of Dermatology, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO) is not ticketed and therefore open to almost any healthcare professional attending the Academy’s Annual Meeting. The venue can accommodate 500 to 600 people and a large crowd is expected.

Medical professionals from a variety of dermatologic specialties will discuss the latest in the diagnosis and treatment of excessive sweating. Specific discussion topics will include:
  • Hyperhidrosis: Making the Right Diagnosis
  • Treatment Options: An Evidence-based Review
  • Hyperhidrosis and the Pediatric Population
  • Axillary Hyperhidrosis: Using Botulinum Toxins
  • Axillary Hyperhidrosis: How to Manage with Liposuction and Curettage
  • Palmar Hyperhidrosis: Using Iontophoresis
  • Palmar-Plantar Hyperhidrosis: How to Use Botulinum Toxins
  • No More Blocks! Ice and Vibration for Palmar and Plantar Injections
  • Billing and Coding: How to Get Paid
A question-and-answer session will conclude the symposium.
